Exploring my Asset Archive - Integrating my work from Inktober 2018

Inktober is a great way to test your creativity and illustration skills! For my most recent Inktober project, I wanted to really test myself and elevate the project from the last time I did the challenge.

My first Inktober in 2017 was primarily to get me back into the habit of drawing every day, and it worked very well! However, when the project was over, I had a sketchbook full of drawings with some great results, but I found it difficult to utilize the finished pieces.

For this reason, I wanted to use my time better in the 2018 challenge, so I set my goal to both sketch and digitally finish each different drawing. This let me build up a library of assets to use for new Cyanotype products, and gave me ready-to-go illustrations for practicing my surface design.

I chose to follow the 2018 Official Inktober Prompt List, and I wanted to do a series of plants for the project. I did a lot of research in order to find plants that fit even the more unusual themes, and I definitely expanded my botany knowledge along the way.

So far, since wrapping up my Inktober project, I’ve been able to experiment both with making patterns, and with creating die-cut stickers from two of the illustrations that I’ve released as new products.

Free Download - I Love Carbs Valentines

One of the things I like to do to keep myself sharp is to do fun social media illustrations. Usually, I look for little holidays like National Croissant Day to inspire a quick sketch.

I find it really helpful to work through the process of having an idea, sketching, refining and finishing it as a quick exercise, and posting those quick pieces on Instagram gives me a reason to take on these little projects.

Anyway, I hope you all have a lovely Valentines day, make sure to tell your partners, friends and family how much you care about them!

Thoughts on Inktober 2017

Blog-Insta-Collage.png

This month, I decided to take on the Inktober challenge. I've always loved patterns, and ever since I discovered surface design a few years ago, I've wanted to try it. For the project, I decided I would create a different repetitive pattern every day, experimenting with different inks, layering and styles to create a wide range of prints.

One skill I am working on for my personal projects is to share more of the process. When I'm working on something new for myself, I often end up reworking and refining forever, without sharing the work or getting outside feedback. Doing Inktober this year turned out to be a great way to get more comfortable with quickly executing and finishing ideas, since the goal is to post a new piece every day.

As the month progressed, I became more comfortable sharing my work on the same day. One of the things that encouraged me to keep posting was the positive feedback that I received from friends and the Inktober community on the patterns.

As a thank you for all the support I received this month, I've decided to release a handful of the patterns as free digital wallpapers over the next couple of months! I'm starting with the Oak pattern of leaves and acorns, which was the most loved print on Instagram. You can download the print in a burgundy and mustard color scheme below.

Overall, doing Inktober was a great experience. It was a way to challenge myself by sharing my work more openly, and working in a medium I've admired for a long time. Thank you so much for following along this month, and if you'd like, please stick around for a new wallpaper in a few weeks.

Cheers! - Janelle
